Red yeast rice is a product of ancient Chinese medicinal wisdom, emerges as a beacon of natural health through the fermentation of a specific strain of yeast (Monascus purpureus) on rice. Monacolin K: A Natural Alternative to Lovastatin

In 1987, the USFDA approved lovastatin for treating high cholesterol and heart disease. As the chemically identical active ingredient in lovastatin, Monacolin K has become a popular natural alternative for managing high cholesterol, particularly for individuals who are intolerant to statins.

Unlike synthetic lovastatin, which exists in lactone form, Monacolin K naturally occurs in its acid form during the fermentation of red yeast rice. This is why it is often referred to as a "natural statin."

Due to its unique acid form, Monacolin K does not require hydrolysis by hydroxyl esterases to become bioactive, yet it functions in the same way as lovastatin. This reduces the strain on the liver while effectively lowering circulating cholesterol and LDL levels.

Production Process

Sterilization Methods

We have two sterilization methods along with the corresponding processes and equipment: irradiation sterilization and high-temperature sterilization. Irradiation sterilization can retain as much Monacolin K in acid form as possible, while high-temperature sterilization can avoid Cobalt-60 residues. Customers can choose flexibly.

Small Tank Solid-State Fermentation

The small-tank solid-state fermentation process has higher visualization, more flexibility, and stronger monitorability. Under conditions of constant temperature and humidity and in light-proof conditions, our operators check the fermentation condition of each tank every day. In this way, each tank can timely monitor the raw materials and prevent a single potential source of contamination from affecting the whole batch.

Inoculation

In the inoculation process of TWIN HORSE, we use our own patented strain Mr-99, which can stably and efficiently produce high levels of Monacolin K during the fermentation process. Mr-99 controls the extremely low output of citrinin and can also produce abundant collateral metabolites，e.g. amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, y-aminobutyric acid, isoflavones and other physiological active substances.
